Emperor Shomu issued a tribute to the construction of the Great Buddha, and in 752 an eye-opening memorial service was held. About 2.6 million people are involved in the construction, and the construction cost is estimated to be about 465.7 billion yen. The Great Buddha and the Great Buddha Hall were burnt down in 1180 and 1567, but revived. The height of the Great Buddha statue is about 14.7m.
